31 Important SEO Terminologies

A permanent server redirect – a change of address for a web page found in the htaccess file on apache servers. Also useful for dealing with canonical issues. Webmasters should use the 301 redirect if they have changed domains, or have launched their site on a new content management system with a new URL structure. A 301 redirect will tell the search engines to direct all ranking and value signals to the new URL, and that the new url is now permanent.

302-Found means that the client-requested resource can be found at a different URL than the one at which it was initially requested. Because it was used historically for various purposes, it no longer carries any other semantic meaning. It would be an error to say that it still means “Moved Temporarily” — All it really means is “Moved.”

The 404 or Not Found error message is an HTTP standard response code indicating that the client was able to communicate with a given server, but the server could not find what was requested.
Why customized error page?
a. Better understandability of error
b. It could be Sitemap
c. Crawler & User Friendly

It is a word or phrase that can be inserted as an attribute in an HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) document to tell Web site viewers the nature or contents of an image. The alt textappears in a blank box that would normally contain the image.A description of a graphic, which usually isn’t displayed to the end user, unless the graphic is undeliverable, or a browser is used that doesn’t display graphics. Alt text is important because search engines can’t tell one picture from another. Alt text is the one place where it is acceptable for the spider to get different content than the human user, but only because the alt text is accessible to the user, and when properly used is an accurate description of the associated picture. Special web browsers for visually challenged people rely on the alt text to make the content of graphics accessible to the users.

The user visible text of a link. Search engines use anchor text to indicate the relevancy of the referring site and of the link to the content on the landing page. Ideally all three will share some keywords in common

Search engine optimization tactics that are counter to best practices such as the Google Webmaster Guidelines

(duplicate content) canon = legitimate or official version – It is often nearly impossible to avoid duplicate content, especially with CMSs like WordPress, but also due to the fact that www.site.com, site.com, and www.site.com/index.htm are supposedly seen as dupes by the SEs – although it’s a bit hard to believe they aren’t more sophisticated than that. However these issues can be dealt with effectively in several ways including – using the no index meta tag in the non-canonical copies, and 301 server redirects to the canon.

Web site owners use the /robots.txt file to give instructions about their site to web robots; this is called The Robots Exclusion Protocol.
It works likes this: a robot wants to vists a Web site URL, say http://www.example.com/welcome.html. Before it does so, it firsts checks for http://www.example.com/robots.txt, and finds:

Disallowed: /

The practice of delivering different content to the search engine spider than that seen by the human users. This Black Hat tactic is frowned upon by the search engines and caries a virtual death penalty of the site/domain being banned from the search engine results.

(gateway) A web page that is designed specifically to attract traffic from a search engine. A doorway page which redirects users (but not spiders) to another site or page is implementing cloaking. – Previous Definition revised based upon advice from Michael Martinez

Googlebot is used to search the Internet. It uses Web crawling software by Google, which allows them to scan, find, add and index new web pages. In other words, “Googlebot is the name of the search engine spider for Google. Googlebot will visit sites which have been submitted to the index every once in a while to update its index

The excessive reuse of the same keyword on too many web pages within the same site. This practice makes it difficult for the users and the search engines to determine which page is most relevant for the keyword.

The percentage of words on a web page which are a particular keyword. If this value is unnaturally high the page may be penalized.

Keyword proximity refers to the closeness between two or more keywords. In general, the closer the keywords are, the better.

Keyword prominence refers to how prominent keywords are within a web page.

is a search engine optimization (SEO) technique, in which a web page is loaded with keywords in the meta tags or in content of a web page. Keyword stuffing may lead to a website being banned or penalized in search ranking on major search engines either temporarily or permanently.

A link farm is a group of websites that all hyperlink to every other site in the group.
Most link farms are created through automated programs and services and can include thousands of unrelated websites all linking to each other. Link farms are a quick, easy and relatively cheap way to build bigger link portfolios for each site involved in the link farm. However, link farms are typically viewed as a way to spam the search engines and are therefore considered a black hat tactic.
Site owners that belong to link farms are trying to manipulate the SERPs by artificially inflating the number of links a given site has. Link farms are more about quantity and not about building quality links that the search engines recommend site owners seek out.
Since the search engines look at how many inbound links a site has when determining where it will fall in the SERPs, unscrupulous site owners and spammers list their site on link farms in order to build a large link portfolio very quickly. Many of the search engines updates are focused on penalizing sites that are apart of link farm

To extract income from a site. Adsense ads are an easy way to Monetize a website.

A command found in either the HEAD section of a web page or within individual link code, which instructs robots to not follow either any links on the page or the specific link. A form of link condom.

Also if you do not use rel attribute the link will be treated as ‘dofollow’. These links are important in terms of SEO as they are tracked by search engines and the value (which is called link juice) of the linksalso gets transferred. SEO Tip: Try to get more “do follow backlinks” from good site.

(link exchange, link partner) Two sites which link to each other. Search engines usually don’t see these as high value links, because of the reciprocal and potentially incestuous nature

if site A links to site B, but site B does not link back to site A, then the link is considered non reciprocal. Search engines tend to give more value to non-reciprocal links than to reciprocal ones because they are less likely to be the result of collusion between sites.

page Rank (named after Larry Page) is a link analysis algorithm used by Google that measures how many links point to a website or page, and more importantly the quality or importance of the sites that provide those links. It uses a numerical scale, with 0 being the least important and 10 being the most important. In an attempt to “cheat the system”, some website owners have tried to purchase links back to their website hoping for a higher Page Rank. However, those low quality links can have a negative impact and result in a lower Google Page Rank. In addition, a website may be penalized or blocked from search results, giving priority to websites and web pages that have quality linkbacks and content that is valuable to humans. If your Page Rank Test results are lower than you’d like them to be, you might want to use this Back Link Check tool to determine the Page Rank (value) of sites that are linking to your website or page, then further examing the value of each individual link with this Link Analysis tool. Also, you can use this Backlink Maker tool to create valuable (high PR) linkbacks.Page Rank is only updated 2 to 3 times a year, so the best policy is to put your best foot forward with value link building and quality content, and then run this test on a quarterly basis to see if there are any changes

There has been debate and speculation that Google puts all new sites into a “sandbox,” preventing them from ranking well for anything until a set period of time has passed. The existence or exact behavior of the sandbox is not universally accepted among SEOs.

Spamdexing or search engine spamming is the practice of deceptively modifying web pages to increase the chance of them being placed close to the beginning of search engine results, or to influence the category to which the page is assigned in a dishonest manner. – Wikipedia
